Innovating Language Education for a Connected World: Technology, Collaboration, and Global Communication
In today’s rapidly globalizing world, language learning has become more critical than ever. With international collaboration on the rise and digital technologies connecting people across borders, effective communication in multiple languages is a vital skill for individuals and a significant asset for societies. While multilingualism is seen as a key to economic and social mobility, the landscape of language learning varies considerably across regions. In Latin America, the demand for English language skills is steadily increasing, driven by globalization and the need for enhanced economic opportunities. However, the region faces specific challenges. According to several research studies and international English Proficiency Indexes, Latin America generally performs below other regions globally. Factors contributing to this include disparities in access to quality education, socio-economic inequalities, and the diverse linguistic landscape. While many Latin American countries have implemented policies to improve English language learning, the effectiveness of these programs is often hindered by issues such as inadequate teacher training, limited resources, and curricula that may not always be adapted to local contexts. For instance, in Colombia, despite national bilingual programs, the country still ranks relatively low in English proficiency compared to global standards.
Looking ahead to 2025, key trends are shaping the future of language education globally and within Latin America. These include the increasing personalization of learning through AI-powered tools, the use of immersive technologies like virtual and augmented reality to create engaging learning environments, the adoption of microlearning for flexible study, the continued rise of gamification to enhance motivation, and the growth of hybrid learning models that blend online and in-person instruction. Recognizing these trends and the specific challenges and opportunities in the Latin American context, we are pleased to announce our upcoming conference, “Innovating Language Education for a Connected World: Technology, Collaboration, and Global Communication.” This event will be held in a hybrid modality, offering both in-person participation in Medellín, Colombia, and virtual attendance options to reach a wider audience.
This conference aims to explore the evolving landscape of English Language Teaching (ELT) in an increasingly digital and interconnected world. We invite English teachers, bilingual education coordinators, language center coordinators, language policy makers, government representatives involved in bilingual education programs, and researchers to engage with insights, experiences, and innovative approaches that address the changing needs of learners and the challenges of the 21st century, particularly within the diverse educational settings of Latin American countries.

SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING AS A CORE LITERACY IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING - ABSTRACT
This session positions social-emotional learning (SEL) as an essential component of literacy in the English language classroom. Going beyond academic skills, SEL develops learners’ ability to recognize and manage emotions, build understanding across differences, and foster healthy relationships—skills that directly support language acquisition. The session will explore how SEL aligns with and enriches other literacies, such as textual, visual, and global, creating a holistic approach to language teaching. Practical examples will illustrate how SEL can be embedded into lessons to lower affective filters, enhance learner engagement, and create safe, inclusive environments. Attendees will leave with strategies to integrate SEL into everyday practice, empowering them to prepare learners for success in an increasingly interconnected world and to see language teaching as a pathway to developing resilient, compassionate global citizens.

SPEAK UP, STAND OUT: ORACY AND THE ROLE OF PERSONALIZATION IN MIXED-ABILITY CLASSROOMS - ABSTRACT
As we prepare our students for using English outside of the classroom, whether in further education or the world of work, it’s essential that we equip them not only with grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation but also with the life competencies necessary to flourish in the world and reach their full potential. One of those competencies is oracy, the ability to express oneself clearly, communicate effectively, listen actively and interact respectfully. In order to do this, we need to ensure our students' learning is relevant and personalized, especially as there will always be a
range of levels and interests in any one class. In this session, we will look at a number of practical activities that can be done both in class and at home to help personalize content and develop our students' oracy skills.
